We purchased this mixed-use Bywater property in early 2021. The property includes one commercial space fronting Chartres Street, currently occupied by MK Red, which includes garage, office and fabrication space, as well as ample off-street parking. The building also includes two additional office spaces on the second floor, an additional standalone garage space, and a five-bedroom apartment facing the River.
The building sustained severe damage from Hurricane Ida, and is currently undergoing a gut renovation within a majority of the space. The project is intended to bring the property up to modern standards, while remaining true to the rustic aesthetic and storied history that make this property so unique. The site has been a hub of activity for Bywater residents since the turn of the 20th century, serving as a neighborhood store through the 1920’s, a prohibition-era speakeasy in the early 1930’s, the “Banana Inn” saloon in the 50’s and 60’s, and “Mickey’s All Nations Bar” in the 60’s and 70’s.
